Winter PPF Care Tips for Twin Cities Drivers
Protecting Your PPF Through Minnesota Winters
Minnesota winters are brutal — sub-zero temperatures, road salt, sand, and freezing rain can all affect your vehicle's paint protection film. Here's how Twin Cities drivers can keep their PPF in perfect condition all winter long.
1. Wash Regularly to Remove Road Salt
Road salt is the #1 enemy of vehicle finishes in Minnesota. While PPF protects your paint from salt damage, salt buildup on the film can cause staining if left for extended periods.
- Wash your vehicle every 1-2 weeks during winter
- Use a touchless car wash or hand wash — avoid brush washes
- Pay extra attention to the lower panels, bumper, and rocker areas where salt accumulates
- Rinse thoroughly to remove all salt residue
2. Avoid Hot Water on Frozen Film
Never pour hot water on frozen PPF to de-ice your vehicle. The thermal shock can cause the film to contract unevenly. Instead:
- Use your vehicle's defroster and let it warm up naturally
- Use a soft snow brush — never ice scrapers on PPF-protected surfaces
- A lukewarm rinse is fine, but avoid extreme temperature changes
3. Self-Healing Still Works in Winter
XPEL's self-healing technology is heat-activated. In Minnesota's cold winters, minor scratches won't self-heal as quickly as in summer. But don't worry:
- Park in a heated garage when possible — the warmth activates self-healing
- On warmer winter days (above 40°F), the film will heal surface scratches
- In spring, warm temperatures will heal any accumulated winter scratches
4. Protect the Edges
Ice and snow removal can lift PPF edges if you're not careful:
- Brush snow away from PPF edges, not toward them
- Avoid prying ice near the edges of protected panels
- If you notice edge lifting, bring your vehicle in for a quick repair before it worsens
5. Apply a Ceramic Coating Booster
If your PPF has XPEL Fusion Plus ceramic coating or a separate ceramic coating applied, consider a ceramic booster spray before winter. This adds an extra hydrophobic layer that makes salt and grime slide off more easily, reducing the need for frequent washing.
6. Schedule a Post-Winter Inspection
After winter ends (typically late March in Minnesota), schedule a PPF inspection at DrivenMN. We'll check for:
- Any edge lifting from ice/snow contact
- Salt staining or contamination
- Surface scratches that need heat treatment
- Overall film condition and adhesion
